Radiation Therapy kills cancer cells by damaging their DNA so that the cells stop dividing or die. When a patient undergoes surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, radiation therapy is usually recommended to prevent local disease recurrence from any residual cancer cells. There are two methods to deliver radiation: Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy (IORT or IOERT), and conventional post-operative radiation therapy (EBRT). In the past, post-operative external beam radiation has been more common. After surgery, patients receive a serers of low-dose x-ray beam external treatments five days a week for five to seven weeks. During the final week, the patient is given a higher dose of radiation to the target area, called a boost. There are disadvantages to conventional radiation treatment. The target area is approximated because the tumor bed cannot be directly visualized, so healthy tissue may be unintentionally irradiated. The total dose of radiation is high and can endanger critical organs, affect swallowing in patients with head and neck cancer, and damage reproductive organs. Also, daily transportation to and from the radiation center can be stressful on a recovering patient.
