Definition : Laboratory analyzers used to determine the concentration of catecholamines (e.g., epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine) and their metabolites in body fluids (e.g., plasma, urine). Most dedicated laboratory catecholamine analyzers are based on high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) using electrochemical detection or fluorimetric methods. Some analyzers use radioimmunoassay methods. The measurement of catecholamines are primarily used for the diagnosis of catecholamine-secreting tumors (e.g., neuroblastomas). The excess of catecholamines is associated with stress, fall of blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and other diseases; their deficiency is seen in idiopathic postural hypotension.
