Bone Ultrasonometers

Definition : Densitometers designed to assess bone density by delivering ultrasonic energy through a targeted body part; they may also be used to obtain bone structural information. These densitometers typically determine bone density by measuring the speed and/or attenuation of ultrasound energy usually over frequencies from 0.2 to 0.6 MHz (known as broadband ultrasonic attenuation [BUA]). Bone ultrasound densitometers are used mainly to determine bone density in the appendicular skeleton, typically by measuring the heel (i.e., calcaneus) bone.
