Breast Implants, Gel-Filled

Definition : Breast implants that are prefilled with silicone gel. These implants typically consist of an outer shell (e.g., silicone elastomer) that may include a single or double (i.e., one shell inside the outer shell) lumen, silicone gel filler, and a patch to seal the shell once filled. Single-lumen implants are prefilled with a fixed volume of gel in the manufacturing process. Double-lumen implants have an inner lumen prefilled with silicone gel and an outer lumen ready for filling with saline during surgical implantation or vice versa; some implants may allow adjustment of the saline content after implantation. Silicone gel breast implants are intended for breast reconstruction and/or augmentation.
