Calipers, Skinfold, Electronic

Definition : Skinfold calipers designed to assess body fat in subcutaneous adipose tissue by measuring the skinfold thickness and processing the data electronically. Measurement of the thickness of folds of skin gathered at various areas of the body is displayed on the device. These instruments are typically electrically powered (usually with batteries), handheld, pistol-like metallic and/or rigid plastic calipers with curved working ends that apply even pressure to the skinfold. Electronic skinfold calipers help to perform fast and repetitive measurements on the posterior aspect of the upper arm, thighs, or back or over the lower ribs; the instruments typically show the results as percent body fat (e.g., using an standard algorithm such as the Jackson-Pollack formula) in a digital display.
