Cannulae, Femoral, Cardiac Bypass

Definition : Femoral cannulae designed for use in cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. These cannulae are usually 9 to 24 Fr tubes with an end hole (some may include side holes); they are short enough to keep the distal tip inside the femoral vessel (femoral artery or femoral vein). Cardiac bypass femoral cannulae are used for diverting the patient's blood to and from external tubing and an arterial pump, bypassing the heart and lungs completely; aortic and vena caval cannulae are also used for this purpose.
