Catheters, Intracranial, Brachytherapy

Definition : Intracranial catheters designed for brachytherapy treatment in the brain, usually in the cavity ramaining after tumor resection. Typically, several catheters are used simultaneously; they are frequently introduced using an external template that is fixed to the skull. The external ends of the catheters are connected via external tubes to an automated (remote) afterloading brachytherapy system that delivers the high-dose radioactive source (e.g., seeds) through the catheters to an area close to the tumor site. The catheters are removed after several days of treatment. Brachytherapy intracranial catheters are used in the treatment of brain tumors.
