Catheters, Urinary, Urethral, Drainage, Intermittent

Definition : Catheters designed to be inserted into the bladder via the urethra for the purpose of draining urine from the bladder once or at various intervals as needed on a regular schedule (i.e., intermittent). These catheters are designed to be single use; unlike Foley urinary catheters (retained catheters), intermittent urinary drainage catheters are not intended to remain in the bladder for an extended period and are removed from the bladder immediately after the urine is drained. Catheters used in males are usually curved and 20 to 40 cm (8 to 16 inches) in length, while catheters for female patients are straight and smaller.
