Catheters, Vascular, Angioplasty, Balloon, Coronary

Definition : Angioplasty vascular catheters designed to dilate a stenotic coronary artery by controlled inflation of a distensible balloon. These catheters usually consist of a double-lumen tube with an inflatable inner balloon in the distal tip and a side hole that is used for pressure recording and contrast material ejection. Typically, a guiding catheter is peripherally inserted and advanced into the section of the coronary artery requiring dilatation; this catheter guides the dilating catheter into the stenotic coronary artery branch, where the balloon is inflated across the stenosis to a predetermined maximal outer diameter, thereby enlarging the lumen. After balloon deflation, the catheter is withdrawn. These catheters are mostly used for the treatment of obstructions in the coronary arteries and aortocoronary saphenous vein bypass grafts. Dedicated coronary artery balloon catheters intended to deliver drugs (e.g., using porous or externally coated balloons) and/or permitting the circulation of blood (perfusion) to the distal vasculature during the procedure are available.
