Embolectomy/Thrombectomy Systems, Mechanical Fragmentation, Intravascular

Definition : Systems designed to restore blood flow to arteries and veins occluded with a stationary blood clot (i.e., thrombus) or a mass lodged in the vasculature (i.e., embolus) using mechanical fragmentation technology. These systems typically consist of a driving mechanism and a control unit, switches, and a fragmentation catheter. The driving unit operates the intravascular fragmentation catheter, the control unit regulates the complete process, and a fragmentation catheter that may also remove the thrombus and/or embolus and other debris. Intravascular mechanical fragmentation systems are intended to restore normal flow of blood in occluded vasculature. These systems are mainly used in procedures performed in catheterization laboratories.
