Ergometers, Cyclic Arm Exerciser

Definition : Ergometers designed to measure the work (i.e., the amount of force multiplied by the distance over which the force is applied) or rate of work (i.e., power) performed by the upper extremity muscles while performing rotary movement on an arm exerciser (that is usually an integral part of the ergometer) under controlled conditions. Arm exerciser ergometers determine the work and power by measuring the force exerted during the rotary movement of the arms (e.g., using electromagnetic brakes) and the speed of movement of the handgrips of the exerciser. Cyclic arm exerciser ergometers are used in tests intended to assess whether patients have cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases; they may be used in tests that include use of a stress exercise physiologic monitoring system. The exercisers are available in several configurations (e.g., wall mounted, free standing).
