Hooks, Surgical

Definition : Hooks designed to temporarily secure tissues or organs by catching and/or pulling them during dissection, excision, and/or to perform other surgical procedures with minimal trauma. Surgical hooks are handheld manual instruments with a shank bent near the distal end (usually at angles from 135 to 180 degrees) and a blunt or sharp tip; these hooks typically include a handle at the proximal end. Some surgical hooks (also known as forks) include two or more prongs at the distal tip. Dedicated hooks intended for use in specific types of surgical procedures (e.g., ophthalmology, middle ear, and orthopedic surgeries) are also available.
