Irradiators, Blood

Definition : Irradiators designed to provide uniform and efficient irradiation of blood and blood products. These devices typically consist of a main unit containing a shielded radioactive source (e.g., cesium 137, cobalt 60), a canister chamber, timers, controls, and a detachable canister to manipulate the blood products. Irradiation of blood products is intended to inhibit lymphocyte division, decreasing the risk of graft-versus-host disease.
