IVD Test Reagent/Kits, Clinical Chemistry, Electrolyte, Sodium

Definition : Clinical chemistry reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative chemical analysis in a sample of a body fluid (typically serum or plasma) to determine the sodium electrolyte (Na+) level. High levels of sodium in blood (hypernatremia) are associated with excessive loss of fluids caused by vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive sweating; some injuries of the brain; and several diseases (e.g., cardiac failure). Low levels of sodium in blood (hyponatremia) are associated with decreased intake of sodium and metabolic acidosis. The determination of the concentration of chloride and sodium in sweat is used as a diagnostic test for cystic fibrosis.
