Lasers, Diode, Surgical

Definition : Diode lasers, usually operated in continuous-wave mode, typically at 810 or 980 nm wavelength, mainly used to cut, excise, or vaporize and coagulate tissues. Their laser energy, especially at 980 nm wavelength, penetrates deep into tissue and is absorbed by a large volume of tissue, allowing photocoagulation of blood vessels at low power densities and vaporization of tumors at high power densities. These lasers are used in open, laparoscopic, and endoscopic surgery.
