Orthoses, Spine, Sacroiliac, Therapeutic, Traction Belt

Definition : Sacroiliac spinal orthoses designed to provide therapeutic traction to the lower spine including the lumbar and pelvic areas. These orthoses typically consist of a padded belt (e.g., cotton, vinyl) that is placed around the waist; the belt has one or more straps with rings at the end that permit its attachment to the cable of an external traction unit that usually includes a pulley and a set of weights. Some belts include additional rings for attachment to a spreader bar. Traction may also be provided using portable devices that use hydraulic force applied and controlled by a handheld pump with a pressure-relief valve. Traction belts are used mainly for relief of low-back pain and to maintain normal alignment of the vertebrae.
