Orthoses, Upper Limb, Elbow, Therapeutic, Long Arm Cast

Definition : Therapeutic elbow upper-limb orthoses designed to provide static therapy to the elbow joint. These orthoses immobilize, stabilize, and support the elbow joint in a desired position (i.e., without allowing movement of the joint) using cast along the arm and forearm (known as long-arm casts). These orthoses typically consist of a cast that is placed around the upper limb from above the wrist to the mid portion of the arm with the elbow in its maximum extended position. Sometimes the cast is placed with the elbow flexed; in that case, the cast is changed periodically to get more extended positions each time. Long-arm casts are used mainly to treat flexion contractures of the elbow; bi-valved long-arm casts are also available for this use.
