Definition : Finger upper-limb orthoses designed for maximum restriction of movements and/or total immobilization of the inter-phalangeal (IP) joints. These orthoses may consist of a variety of devices typically including a semi-rigid lightweight plastic structure with aluminum stays (e.g., a splint) and closure straps or sleeves. Finger upper-limb static immobilizers are used mainly to protect and/or stabilize the fingers after traumatic injuries and to alleviate pain. Dedicated IP joint immobilizers intended for the thumb joints are also available.
