Procedure Kit/Trays, Amniocentesis

Definition : Prepackaged collections of the devices and supplies (either custom or standard) needed for performing a transabdominal perforation of the uterus to obtain amniotic fluid (i.e., amniocentesis). Items in these kits usually include spinal needles, syringes, anesthetics (e.g., lidocaine ampules), collection tubes with caps, sponge applicators, a ruler, gauze pads, absorbent towels, fenestrated drapes, and bandages. The kits are frequently supplied in supporting trays (i.e., procedure trays) consisting of a flat-bottomed receptacle with a border around the periphery supporting all the instruments and supplies needed for the procedure; the trays are usually covered or wrapped. Amniocentesis procedure kits and trays are intended for use during labor and delivery to assess fetal lung maturity, to establish rupture of membranes, to rule out infection, to evaluate fetal well-being, or to evaluate for chromosomal abnormalities.
