Prostheses, Joint, Temporomandibular, Intra-Articular Disc

Definition : Implantable prostheses designed to replace the natural fibrocartilage disc attached to the mandibular condyle by ligaments, permitting rotation on the condyle during translational jaw movements. These prostheses provide a partial substitution of the temporomandibular articulation; they are typically made of plastic (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate) or other polymeric materials. Intra-articular disc temporomandibular prostheses enable the sliding function of the temporomandibular disc; they are used in patients who suffer from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, congenital malformations, or neoplasms, as well as after trauma (e.g., fracture).
