Recorders, Audio, Solid State Drive

Definition : Audio recorders designed to store sound information in digital format in an internal solid state memory (i.e., solid state drive [SSD]). These recorders usually consist of an electronic device that includes an integral microphone and/or external jacks to attach microphones or other sound sources; an analog/digital converter; data processors; controls; and a SSD memory. Some recorders include external slots or connectors for use with optical compact disks and/or connectors for secure digital (SD) or compact flash (CF) cards. The audio information may be recorded using a variety of formats, frequently following a compression format known as MP3. SSD memory recorders usually have playing capabilities that include a digital/analog converter and either integral amplifiers and speakers or they can provide output to sound reproduction systems. SSD audio recorders are available in tabletop, rack mounted, and portable versions. Dedicated digital recorders with special characteristics used for voice recording and retrieval (e.g., in dictation systems) are also available.
