Definition : Ophthalmic diagnostic instruments designed mainly to assess the preoperative retinal acuity in patients with cataracts. These instruments typically consist of a handheld device that produces a grating pattern projected by a light source (e.g., halogen bulb) that produces an interference effect. The pupil is scanned with different values of acuity, grating angle, and ambient light until the patient cannot recognize the angle anymore. Retinometers are intended mostly for preoperative prediction of the visual acuity that a patient will have after cataract surgery.
