Topical Solution/Cream/Suppositories, Rectum

Definition : Solutions, creams, or suppositories applied around and/or into the rectum to produce topical, non-metabolic effects. These products are typically based on natural products, such as oil (e.g., olive, glycerin) or water compounds (e.g., based on polyethylene glycol); they may also include additional components such herbal extracts and/or other chemical products (e.g., analgesics). Rectal topical solutions/creams/suppositories available in liquid state may be applied as drops or as spray. They are formulated to moisturize, lubricate, and/or protect the anal canal and rectum; some products may also provide local relief of constipation or produce analgesic effects to reduce pain and/or to facilitate the introduction of instruments for examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract. The products are frequently used as laxatives or for local treatment of hemorrhoids; they are not intended for drug administration and do not act metabolically.
