Resuscitators, Cardiac

Definition : Resuscitators designed to artificially create blood circulation in a patient under cardiac arrest. These resuscitators apply mechanical compression cyclically to the thorax, compressing the sternum at least five centimeters (two inches), and forcing the heart to eject blood. Some resuscitators use a load-distributing band to compress the thorax. Most cardiac resuscitators are pneumatically or electrically driven, but a manually operated cardiac press has also been used. Cardiac resuscitators may be used as a substitute for manual external cardiac compression to prevent fatigue of emergency personnel and to provide better consistency in the applied force and rate of compression to ventilation ratio.
