Resinous Compounds, Cranial

Definition : Resin composite materials (compounds) appropriate for skull-defect repair (i.e., cranioplasty). These compounds typically consist of self-curing acrylic resin (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate) or a two-part resinous material of several compositions, frequently including methyl ester of methacrylic acid. Cranial resinous compounds may be conformed as an inert implant (i.e., allograft) in the appropriate shape (e.g., plate) needed to repair the skull defect, using intraoperatively cured solid compositions or preoperatively fabricated porous custom implants. They are used also as bone cement for cranioplasty.

The company was founded in 1961 to provide sample preparation products for electron microscopy as nano-scale samples were starting to reveal new knowledge. Embedding products were added for histology (the study of tissue) applications soon after, enabling tissue embedment in plastic blocks, in addition to paraffin. Dyes and stains were developed to implement better visualization of the samples. In cooperation with federal agencies, monodisperse polymeric microspheres were developed for diagnostic kit applications.
