Definition : Surgical dilators designed for mechanically augmenting the caliber of the internal lumen of the ureters. These surgical dilators are usually, hollow, cylindrical, handheld instruments with a thin, tapered oblique distal end to facilitate placement; they are usually coated with hydrophilic materials to facilitate introduction and use. Ureteral dilators are used to dilate the ureter during surgical urological procedures of the upper urinary tract; they are available in a variety of sizes according to the surgical procedure to be performed.
