Burs, Dental, Steel

Definition : Dental burs made of steel that are usually intended for use with low-speed rotary dental handpieces. These burs typically consist of a shank with a well-differentiated working head in a variety of sizes and shapes (e.g., cone, cylinder, inverted cone, pear) on the distal end; a tapered, notched, or elongated proximal end to fit into the rotary device; and a neck that connects the shank to the working part. Dedicated steel dental burs are available for many different uses, including removal of carious material from teeth, dental cavity preparation, and finishing and polishing of teeth and restorations (e.g., porcelain, metal). They are usually intended for reuse after sterilization, but steel burs rapidly become dull after cutting dental enamel or other very hard materials.
