Recorders, Audio

Definition : Recorders designed to store sound information. Audio recorders usually consist of an electromechanical device that includes an integral microphone and/or external jacks to attach microphones or other sound sources, data processors, controls, and a memory. They may also include an analog/digital converter and other components such as recording and erasing heads. Audio recorders usually have playing capabilities, either through integral amplifiers and speakers or by providing output to sound reproduction systems. Most audio recorders use hard disk, compact disks, or magneto-optical discs; devices with tape memories (e.g., audio cassette recorders) are less frequently used. Audio recorders are available in tabletop, rack mounted, and portable versions. Dedicated recorders with special characteristics used for voice recording, processing, and retrieval typically used as a component of dictation systems are also available.
