Definition : Functional inter-phalangeal (IP) joint orthoses designed to make possible and/or improve the functional activities of the proximal and distal IP joints during common daily activities using a split ring. These devices permit active finger use and facilitate the functional use of the hand. Split ring orthoses typically consist of plastic or metallic semi-rigid ring-shaped devices with a central slot that are placed encircling the finger in a way that permit joint movements. Split ring orthoses are use during daily activities to improve functional use of the hand after brain injuries.
