Catheter Introducers, Vascular, Central Venous, Directly Inserted

Definition : Vascular catheter introducers designed for use in the direct percutaneous introduction of central venous catheters into the jugular, subclavian, axillary, or femoral vein; the distal tip of the catheter is usually advanced until reaching the vena cava or pulmonary artery. These introducers consist of an assembly of devices that may include some or all of the following components: a stylet or trocar, a dilator, a guidewire, and a sheath or a hollow, single-lumen, large-bore catheter (e.g., 3mm/9 French) having a relatively short (10cm/4 inch) length and a tip which lies within the thoracic cavity. Usually all components are taken out after the insertion into the vasculature leaving only the sheath for catheter introduction through it. Some introducer sheaths are peelable for easy discard after the catheter is in place; other sheaths may be dwelling in the vessel for a pre-established maximum time. Central venous catheter introducers may be used for insertion of pacemaker and/or defibrillator leads. Dedicated central venous catheter introducers providing needlestick protection are available; procedure kits and/or trays including all necessary devices and supplies needed for central venous catheterization are also available.
