Definition : Monitors designed for continuous measurement and display of the temperature of the internal regions of the body (core temperature) and/or the skin and subcutaneous (shell) temperature. These monitors consist of a main electronic unit that is capable of acquiring and processing signals from one or more temperature-sensing probes, a transducer, a display, and audible and/or visual alarms that are triggered when the patient's temperature drops below or exceeds preset limits. Temperature monitors are available for hard-wired bedside and telemetric use; most multipurpose and electrocardiography monitors are capable of temperature monitoring.
