Monitors, Physiologic, Respiration, Ventilation/Apnea, Neonatal/Infant, Telemetric

Definition : Physiologic monitors designed to measure and display at a central station the cessation of the breathing of a newborn or infant for a period longer than a pre-established lapse of time (apnea). This measurement is done through a point-to-point radio link (i.e., telemetric). These monitors typically consist of a main unit attached to the infant which includes electronic circuits that can process signals from attached sensors placed on the infant's chest (e.g., a belt), transducers, and a radio transmitter. These sensors detect chest movements and breathing rate. The monitor also includes a second unit with a receiver that is integral or associated to the remote station (e.g., a central station in hospitals, a parent-controlled unit at home) where the information is displayed. Some monitors can also measure heart rate and/or other respiratory parameters. Infant apnea monitors usually include audible and visual alarms to alert apnea episodes; they are used in neonatal intensive care units of hospitals and at home for parent's infant care.
