Definition : Blood pressure monitors designed for quasi-continuous invasive measurement and display of blood pressure values intermittently or at preset intervals and are hard-wired to the patient at the bedside. These monitors are based on intra-arterial invasive sensors that measure blood pressure values. They typically consist of an electronic unit that acquires and processes signals from a transducer attached at the distal tip of a catheter inserted directly into an artery (e.g., radial artery) as maximum and minimum values of blood pressure (i.e., systolic and diastolic pressures). These monitors also display a mean pressure calculated from the measured values using a software algorithm. Various waveform and alphanumeric displays, along with visual/audible alarms, are typically supported; IBP monitors are mostly used in intensive care units and during cardiac catheterization procedures due to the inherent risks of this procedure.
