Recorders, Audio, Hard Disk

Definition : Audio recorders designed to store sound information in digital format in an internal magnetic memory (i.e., hard disk drive [HDD]). These recorders usually consist of an electromechanical device that includes an integral microphone and/or external jacks to attach microphones or other sound sources, an analog/digital converter, data processors, controls, and an HDD memory. Some recorders include media card slots for use with optical compact disks and/or connectors for secure digital (SD) or compact flash (CF) cards. The audio information may be recorded using a variety of formats, frequently following a compression format known as MP3. Hard disk recorders usually have playing capabilities that include a digital/analog converter and either integral amplifiers and speakers or they can provide output to sound reproduction systems. Hard disk audio recorders are available in tabletop, rack mounted, and portable versions. Dedicated digital recorders with special characteristics used for voice recording, assessment, and retrieval (e.g., in dictation systems) are also available.
