Spectrographs

Definition : Analytical instruments designed to identify and quantify elements and compounds by sorting of gaseous ions in electric and/or electromagnetic fields to determine their mass-to-charge ratio using photographic or other non-electrical means of detection. These devices typically consist of a sample inlet, a high vacuum system, an ionization chamber with an ion source to produce a beam of charged particles, a mass analyzer to separate the beam in its components, a photographic or other non-electrical detector, and computerized data system with a software to manage the spectrograph and associated equipment (e.g., microscopes). The photographic detectors may consist of one or more of a variety of CCD, intensified CCD, or other dedicated cameras in the visible, near infrared, and ultraviolet spectrum. Spectrographs are used for micro-spectrography and microfluorescence applications and chemical mapping.
