Definition : Handheld devices designed to engage rotary instruments (e.g., burs), controlling their speed and direction. These devices are used to perform surgical and/or dental procedures, such as drilling and cleaning. Most handpieces are driven by connection to a power source, usually either a pneumatic air system (air compressor) or an electric motor; some are manually driven (intended for use with manual braces).
