Catheters, Intrauterine, Chorionic Villus Sampling

Definition : Intrauterine catheters designed to obtain samples of the threadlike projections growing in the outermost extraembryonic membrane (chorionic villi). These catheters consist of a soft (e.g., polyethylene) tube that usually includes a malleable, preshaped stylet. They are usually introduced under ultrasonographic guidance, and the suction for sampling is provided by an external syringe. Chorionic villus sampling catheters are used to aspirate a tissue sample for genetic testing in the first trimester, typically between the 10th and 12th weeks of pregnancy.
