Information Systems, Telemedicine

Definition : Information systems designed to electronically transmit and receive images and consultative text between remote sites. These systems typically consist of an image-capture station and a receiving station; the image-capture station includes a personal computer (PC) with a high-speed modem, a high-resolution viewing monitor, and an image-capture device, while the receiving station typically consists of a modem, a PC, and a high-resolution image monitor. Telemedicine information systems link hospital departments to other hospitals, physicians' homes, or clinics by means of telephone lines, digital networks, and microwave or satellite transmission; they facilitate rapid diagnosis and consultation by other specialists. The storage capacity of these systems is typically fewer than 1,000 images.
