Definition : Nasogastric catheters designed for injection into bleeding lesions in upper gastrointestinal locations (i.e., esophagus, stomach, duodenum). These catheters usually include a retractable needle with several-millimeter extrusion capability; they are inserted through a standard diagnostic endoscope. Injection nasogastric catheters are used for administration of sclerosing solutions (e.g., polidocanol) and vasoconstrictors (e.g., adrenaline) in the treatment of esophageal varices and peptic ulcers.
