Microwave Surgical Units, Needle Radiator

Definition : Microwave surgical units that use needle-like antennas for energy radiation. These units include a microwave generator typically of 100-watt energy and 2.45 GHz frequency, a coaxial cable to transmit the energy, and needle radiators (i.e., antennas). The needles are positioned surrounding the tissue to be resected (e.g., tumor), power is applied successively to each needle creating a continuous boundary of coagulated tissue surrounding the tumor; hemostasis of vessels up to 2 mm in diameter is possible. The tumor is removed using a scalpel or an electrosurgical unit. Needle microwave radiator surgical units are used in open surgery of the liver and spleen; they are also used in endoscopic and laparoscopic surgical applications (e.g., to control bleeding in the digestive tract).
