Definition : Clinical chemistry reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative chemical analysis of body fluids (typically serum) to determine the level of galactose, a monosaccharide. The presence of galactose in blood (galactosemia) is caused by defective galactose metabolism. Galactosemia includes several hereditary disorders characterized by cataracts, liver disease, and mental retardation; classic galactosemia is often fatal in neonates.
