IVD Test Reagent/Kits, Immunoassay, Toxicology, Hydrocarbon Metabolite, Hippuric Acid

Definition : Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically urine), to determine hippuric acid, a crystallizable acid synthesized in the liver (e.g., from benzoic acid) and excreted in the urine. Hippuric acid is the main human metabolite from toluene, an aromatic hydrocarbon of widespread use in printing, automotive, shoemaking, and speaker manufacturing industries. Reagents used to determine hippuric acid concentration in urine can establish the degree of intoxication with toluene, frequently as the result of occupational exposure. The analysis of the results should consider the dietary sources of the affected patients because they may include food or beverages that contain benzoic acid, increasing the level of hippuric acid in urine not related to toluene.
