Definition : Endoscopes designed for insertion in the gastrointestinal tract for visual examination, biopsy, retrieval of foreign objects, and treatment of lesions in the tract. Gastrointestinal-tract endoscopes for visualization of the upper gastrointestinal tract typically are inserted through the mouth; those intended for the lower gastrointestinal tract are inserted through the rectum.
