Catheters, Breast, Brachytherapy

Definition : Breast catheters designed for introduction into and around a surgically created cavity within the breast to provide brachytherapy treatments, usually after tumor resection (lumpectomy). These catheters are typically very thin single-lumen tubes that are introduced through needles that were placed under ultrasound guidance. Frequently, 10 to 20 catheters are inserted into the breast, encompassing the surgical cavity plus a few centimeters in all directions. Each treatment consists of the automated introduction of a radioactive source (seed) from a remote-afterloading brachytherapy system in each catheter for a predetermined time. The treatment is used to facilitate the control or cure of breast cancer, or to relieve symptoms of breast cancer.
