Prostheses, Joint, Ankle, Total
Definition : Implantable prostheses designed for total replacement of the ankle joint. These prostheses may consist of either a combination of a tibial component and talus component prostheses or, more frequently, of advanced designs that include three or more components. Several total ankle joint prostheses are available with different shapes and technologies. A semiconstrained three-component mobile-bearing prosthesis requires resurfacing of the superior ankle, and a semiconstrained cemented prosthesis requires the conversion of the three-bone ankle joint into a two-bone ankle joint by fusing the fibrous union at the distal ends of the tibia and fibula (i.e., tibiofibularis syndesmosis). Total ankle joint prostheses are used in patients who suffer from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, as well as after trauma.
