
Orthopedic External Fixation Systems, Fracture, Bone Lengthening/Reshaping
Definition : External orthopedic fixation systems designed to lengthen and reshape limb bones by means of surgical fracture. These systems consist of a set of rings fixed to both extremes of the fractured bone with adjustment devices (e.g., nuts) that regulate the distance between the rings. The rings are periodically separated (e.g., at a rate of 1 mm/day) as the healing process and bone growth starts, increasing the separation between the extremes of bone, thus promoting lengthening and/or reshaping of the fractured bone. A new surgery is needed after complete healing to remove the fixation system. Bone lengthening/reshaping orthopedic external fixation systems are intended for the treatment of open and/or complex bone (e.g., tibia, femur) fractures, especially when lengthening and or reshaping of abnormal limbs is needed.
