Definition : Casings of strong cloth, other fabric, or plastic filled with some soft material (e.g., cotton, foam), fluid (e.g., air, water), or gel; they are often quilted or tufted at intervals and used on or as a bed. Some mattresses are made with wire springs inside (i.e., inner-spring mattresses). Mattresses are used in home care, nursing homes, and hospitals on beds and stretchers and on examination and operating tables for patient comfort, support, transport, examination, treatment, surgery, and rehabilitation.
