Tubes, Esophageal, Decompression, Infant

Definition : Esophageal decompression tubes designed for continuous suction and irrigation through a blind ending pouch. These devices typically consist of a radiopaque double-lumen tube (e.g., Replogle tube); one lumen (typically 8 or 10 French diameter) is used for suction and instillation of liquids; the other lumen is used for venting and should be provided with air periodically. The proximal end of the tube is usually connected to an intermittent suction device. Infant esophageal decompression tubes are used mainly for babies with esophageal or gastric problems (e.g., esophageal atresia) frequently before surgical procedures.
